Looking at ReplyGuy? Read This First
Tools like ReplyGuy promise an appealing thing: AI finds relevant Reddit threads and posts replies mentioning your product, on autopilot. If you're comparing options in this category, there's one architectural difference that matters more than any feature list: whether the tool posts on your behalf.
Why auto-posting is a time bomb
Reddit's moderation stack — sitewide spam filters, subreddit AutoModerators, AI-content detectors, and human mods — is very good at spotting accounts that post formulaic promotional replies at scale. The pattern is detectable almost by definition: similar phrasing, product mentions, posting cadence no human keeps. Consequences stack from comment removal to shadowban to permanent account and domain bans — meaning your product's URL can get blacklisted from entire subreddits. Several business subreddits now explicitly ban tools that "generate, schedule, or automate promotional comments" — using one there is a bannable offense in itself.
The uncomfortable economics: the account taking that risk is yours, and the damage is to your brand. The tool vendor keeps their subscription either way.
The drafts-only model
LurkScout deliberately never posts anywhere. It finds buying-intent posts (AI-scored 0–100), drafts a reply for every hot lead — genuinely helpful first, product mentioned once with your affiliation disclosed — and hands it to you. You read it, adjust it to your voice, and post it from your own account at human cadence. That last step taking ninety seconds of your day is not a missing feature; it's the thing that keeps your account alive and your replies trustworthy.
Why disclosed-and-helpful outperforms stealth
Beyond survival, there's a conversion argument. Reddit and Hacker News users are the internet's most ad-averse audience — and its most generous to honest builders. "I make X, so I'm biased, but here's what I'd actually do…" earns upvotes, profile clicks, and trials. Stealth promotion, when detected (and it gets detected), earns the opposite in public. The disclosure isn't compliance theater; it's the persuasion strategy.
Feature comparison, honestly
- Finding + scoring: both categories do discovery; LurkScout scores buying intent 0–100 with extracted timeframe and competitor mentions, so you prioritize the ready-now buyers.
- Replies: auto-posters publish for you (see above); LurkScout drafts for you to post.
- Sources: LurkScout watches Hacker News and GitHub today — Reddit joins the moment Reddit approves our API application (we only use official, approved access; no scraping, which is its own ban risk).
- Price: $29/mo flat (Starter), no per-reply credits.
The short version
If you want volume with zero human minutes and accept the account risk, an auto-poster will always promise more. If you want the channel to still work in six months — same account, growing karma, a product name that isn't blacklisted anywhere — draft-and-post-yourself is the only durable play. That's the one we build for.
